Harold Edward Stassen (1907-2001), American politician, born in West Saint Paul, Minnesota. He was governor of Minnesota from 1938 to 1942 and later served under President Dwight D. Eisenhower as director of the Foreign Operations Administration (1953-1955) and special assistant to the president on disarmament (1955-1958). Stassen was an unsuccessful contender for the Republican presidential nomination ten times—the first in 1948 and the last in 1992.
