Aragonite

Aragonite, calcium carbonate mineral, CaCO3, in its orthorhombic form (see Crystal). Aragonite is harder and less common or stable than calcite, into which it may change over geologic time. It occurs with iron ore and other deposits, around hot springs, and in stalactites and is also secreted by invertebrates as mother-of-pearl and pearl. Its crystals are long, brittle, usually whitish, and transparent to translucent. It has a hardness of 3.5-4 and a sp.gr of 2.9-3.
