Abd al-Hamid I (1725-89), sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1774-89), who left his mark on the Empire as one of the strongest reformers of the 18th century. The son of Ahmed III, he succeeded to the throne on the death of his brother Mustafa III. He was drawn into a disastrous war (1787-92) against Russia and Austria.
