Savannah (river)
Encyclopedia Article
Savannah (river), southeastern U.S., constituting most of the boundary between Georgia and South Carolina. It is formed by the junction of the Tugaloo and Seneca rivers in northwestern South Carolina and flows southeast for 505 km (314 mi) until it enters the Atlantic Ocean. It is navigable by small boats from the Atlantic to Augusta, Georgia. The city of Savannah, Georgia, upstream from the river's mouth, is accessible to oceangoing vessels. Dams upstream from Augusta impound Strom Thurmond and Hartwell lakes and provide hydroelectric power and flood control.
