Nottinghamshire, county, central England; West Bridgforth is the administrative center. Nottinghamshire comprises lowlands in the east and an upland area in the west. Sherwood Forest, a hilly and largely deforested area, occupies much of the western portion of the county. Agricultural activities include dairying and the growing of grains, fruit, and vegetables. Manufactures include hosiery, lace, clothing, bicycles, and machinery. In Anglo-Saxon times the region was part of the kingdom of Mercia.
