Buteshire, former county, western Scotland; Rothesay was the county town. The county comprised the Island of Arran, Bute, the Cumbraes, and several smaller islands, all lying in the Firth of Clyde. On the islands are the remains of prehistoric structures and many early Christian (6th century) churches. In 1975 Buteshire became part of the newly created Strathclyde (see Strathclyde) Region.
