Coppermine, river in northern Canada, in the Fort Smith region of the Northwest Territories and the Kitikmeot region of the Nunavut Territory. The Coppermine is 845 km (525 mi) long. It rises in a small lake near Great Slave Lake and flows generally north to Coronation Gulf, an arm of the Arctic Ocean. The river freezes over in winter and is unnavigable because of rapids and falls during warmer seasons. The main settlement along the river is Coppermine, a chiefly Inuit community near its mouth. The river was named for the Copper Inuit who live in this area.
