Thomas Campbell

Thomas Campbell (1777-1844), Scottish poet, born in Glasgow. His first work, “The Pleasures of Hope” (1799), a poem in couplets, met with immediate success. Much of his fame rests on the poems “Hohenlinden,””Ye Mariners of England,” and “The Battle of the Baltic.” His volumes of poetry include Gertrude of Wyoming (1809), Theodoric (1824), and The Pilgrim of Glencoe (1842). In addition, he compiled Specimens of the British Poets (7 volumes, 1819).
