Kennebec, river, western Maine, rising in Moosehead Lake. It flows generally south 264 km (164 mi) before joining the Androscoggin River to form Merrymeeting Bay, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. The river is dammed at Bingham, Skowhegan, Waterville, and Augusta to provide hydroelectric power. The river is navigable to Augusta.
