Carl Friedrich Georg Spitteler, pseudonym of Carl Felix Tandem (1845-1924), Swiss writer, born in Liestal, and educated in law and theology at the universities of Basel, Zürich, and Heidelberg. His first published work was the epic prose poem Prometheus and Epimetheus (1881; trans 1931). During his long career, Spitteler wrote in many forms of literature, including essays, children's stories, and novels. He was awarded the 1919 Nobel Prize; the citation made particular mention of his four-volume epic poem on gods and godhood, Der Olympische Frühling (Olympian Spring, 1900-6; revised 1910, 1924).
