Plane Geometry, branch of elementary geometry dealing with the properties of flat surfaces and of planar figures, such as the triangle or the circle. This branch is also known as Euclidean geometry, after the Greek mathematician Euclid, who first studied the subject in the 4th century bc. His comprehensive treatise Elements remained authoritative until the rise of so-called non-Euclidean geometry in the 19th century.
