Dinka, native people of the Republic of the Sudan in Africa. Since about the 10th century, they have inhabited an area on both sides of the White Nile. The Dinka speak a language of the Nilotic subgroup of the Nilo-Saharan family. Tall and slender, they are noted for their good physique, as well as for their valor. A pastoral people, they raise herds of cattle, sheep, and goats for their livelihood. Their social system is headed by chiefs who serve as priests and peacemakers.
