Asclepiades (flourished 1st century bc), Greek physician, native of the ancient country of Bithynia in Asia Minor. He was a teacher of oratory in Rome, but later took up the practice of medicine. He believed that the movement of atoms in the body caused disease, and he advocated baths, dieting, exercise, and massage as cures. His numerous followers founded a school of medicine known as the Methodical.
