It rises in Umbagog Lake, on the boundary between New Hampshire and Maine, and flows south through New Hampshire to Gorham. Turning east, it flows into Maine, crosses the state in a generally southeastern direction, and empties into the estuary of the Kennebec River at Bath. About 280 km (180 mi) long, it is the source of extensive waterpower.
