Republican (river), river in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas, formed by the junction of the North Fork of the Republican River and the Arikaree River. It flows for 716 km (445 mi) east across southern Nebraska, then southeast into Kansas, where it joins the Smoky Hill River at Junction City to form the Kansas River. Dams along its course impound Milford and Harlan County lakes.
