Cumbrian Mountains

Cumbrian Mountains, mountain range, northwestern England. The breadth of the uplift, which has some 25 summits above 457 m (1500 ft) is about 56 km (about 35 mi). Valuable deposits of coal and iron ore are found in the range. Notable elevations are Scafell Pike, 978 m (3,209 ft) above sea level and the highest mountain in England, Helvellyn (950 m/3118 ft), Skiddaw (931 m/3053 ft), Cross Fell (893 m/2930 ft), and Saddleback (868 m/2847 ft). Many narrow valleys radiate in all directions from the central region. Many lakes, including Windermere, comprise the Lake District, made famous by the so-called Lake poets—William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Southey.
