Argyllshire
Encyclopedia Article
Argyllshire, former county, western Scotland; Inveraray was the county town. The county, largely mountainous and unarable with a deeply indented Atlantic coastline, included numerous islands. Among the more important islands, which belong to the Inner Hebrides, are Mull, Islay, and Iona; the Celtic missionary St. Columba founded an abbey on Iona in the 6th century. The history of Argyllshire after the 15th century is associated with that of the noble Scottish family of Campbell. In 1975 Argyllshire was divided between the newly created Highland and Strathclyde regions.
