Samana Cay
Encyclopedia Article
Samana Cay, island, Bahamas, in the Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Crooked Island. Samana Cay is uninhabited for most of the year. In the mid-1980s a recalculation of the distances and compass directions in the daily log of Christopher Columbus in 1492, as well as archaeological evidence found on the cay, led a number of scientists to declare that Samana Cay was the site of Columbus's first landfall in the New World. Previously, San Salvador had been accepted as the island on which Columbus first landed.
