Neckar, river, southwestern Germany, a major tributary of the Rhine River. Rising in the Black Forest, near Villingen-Schwenningen, the Neckar has a winding, northerly course of 370 km (230 mi), past Stuttgart and Heidelberg, before joining the Rhine at Mannheim. The picturesque river is navigable, and along part of its course are vineyards and castles.
