Esker, in geology, winding ridge of gravel and sand, believed by geologists to have been deposited during the Pleistocene Epoch. Eskers probably mark the sites of subglacial streams and rivers. The gravel is sometimes heaped 12 to 24 m (40 to 80 ft) in height; and the length of an esker may run from 1.6 to 32 km (1 to 20 mi). The deposits are found in Ireland, Sweden, and northern North America. See also Glacier.
