Mosel or Moselle, river, western Europe, 550 km (342 mi) long, rising in the Vosges Mountain range, northeastern France. It flows in a generally northern direction into Germany and joins the Rhine River at Koblenz. Much of the river is navigable by small craft, and, since the 1960s, for 274 km (170 mi) by larger vessels.
