AzuriteAzurite

Azurite, blue mineral with the formula Cu3(OH)2(CO 3)2. It is often associated with the green mineral malachite, Cu2(OH)2CO3. Both are basic carbonates of copper and are formed by the alteration of copper sulphide minerals. The most important deposits of azurite and malachite occur at Chessy, near Lyon, in France; in the Ural Mountains of Russia; in Australia; and in Arizona in the United States. Their hardness is 3.5 to 4; azurite's specific gravity is 3.8, malachite's is 4.0.

Azurite and malachite have been used as pigments; when ground, azurite yields blue verditer, and malachite, green verditer. Both minerals have a fine vitreous luster, and when properly polished they are highly ornamental. Since ancient times they have been used widely as gemstones.
