Tehuantepec
Encyclopedia Article
Tehuantepec, isthmus, southern Mexico, within the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca, between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The soil is rich and forests are extensive. They yield fustic wood and logwood, and there are large pasturages. Since the days of the Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés suggestions have been made to construct here an interoceanic canal, but estimated costs proved prohibitive. The Tehuantepec National Railroad connects the ports of Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf of Mexico and Salina Cruz on the Pacific.
