Ember Days, in the Roman Catholic church and the Church of England and other churches of the Anglican Communion, three days at the beginning of each church season. These days are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of the weeks occurring after the third Sunday of Advent, the first Sunday of Lent, the feast of Pentecost, and the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14). Conferring of Holy Orders usually takes place on ember days. When the penitential discipline of the church was updated by Pope Paul VI in 1966, fasting and abstinence from meat were dropped as requirements on ember days.
