Other Glider Uses

During World War II (1939-1945), gliders were put to extensive logistic use for carrying supplies and airborne troops. Notable military operations where gliders proved important include the German invasion of Crete (Kríti), the Allied attack on Myitkyinā in Burma (now known as Myanmar), and the Allied invasion of Normandy (Normandie). In the same period the technique of glider pickups was developed, in which a plane in flight hooks onto the towrope of a glider on the ground and lifts it into the air. Glider pickups have been successfully used for rescuing fliers forced down on terrain on which conventional craft could not land.
