Map of Brocken

Brocken, mountain peak, central Germany, highest of the Harz Mountains. It is 1,141 m (3,743 ft) high and is noted for the phenomenon called the Specter of the Brocken (Brockengespenst), an optical illusion in which a vast shadow of a specter is projected on the mists of the mountain under certain atmospheric conditions. Brocken is the legendary gathering place of witches on Walpurgis Night, made famous in a scene in Goethe's Faust.
