Pemba, island in northeastern Tanzania, in the Indian Ocean, near Zanzibar Island. It is 68 km (about 42 mi) long and 23 km (about 14 mi) wide, with an area of 982 sq km (379 sq mi). It was part of a British protectorate from 1890 to 1963; it became part of Tanzania in 1964. The chief towns are Wete and Chake Chake. Cloves and copra are the chief exports. Population (1988) 265,039.
