Encyclopedia Article
Benjamin, in the Old Testament (see Genesis 42-45), youngest and most beloved son of the patriarch Jacob and founder of the Israelite tribe of Benjamin. The warriors of the tribe were noted for their skill in archery and for their cleverness in using the left hand. The tribal territory lay on the west side of the Jordan River, between the regions inhabited by the tribes of Ephraim and Judah. Both Saul, the first king of Israel, and St. Paul belonged to the tribe of Benjamin.
