Zygote, in sexual reproduction, cell formed by the fusion of the male and female sex cells, or gametes (see Gamete), before the fused cell begins to divide and become an embryo (see Embryology). A zygote is a diploid cell, that is, it contains a full set of chromosomes, half of them from each of the gametes. See Fertilization; Genetics; Reproduction; Seed; Sex.
