Albert de Broglie (1821-1901), French statesman and historian, born in Paris. His early career in diplomacy was cut short by the revolution of 1848. He then wrote his monumental work L'église et l'empire romain au IVe siècle (The Church and the Roman Empire in the 4th Century, 6 volumes, 1856-66), for which he was elected (1862) to the French Academy. Broglie served in the National Assembly from 1871 to 1885, and he was deputy premier and minister of foreign affairs in 1873-74 and prime minister in 1877. When he was not reelected to the assembly in 1885, he retired to devote his time to writing several books on history.
