Penobscot (people), North American tribe of the Algonquian language family and of the Northeast culture area. They formerly dwelled around the Penobscot River in Maine. During the wars between Great Britain and France in America, the Penobscot usually sided with the French, but made peace with the British in 1749. Because of their support for the colonists during the American Revolution, they were given a reservation at Old Town, Maine. In the 2000 U.S. census about 2,000 people identified themselves as Penobscot only; an additional 1,800 people reported being part Penobscot.
