Putumayo, also Içá, river of South America. Rising east of Pasto in the Andes Mountains of southwestern Colombia, the Putumayo flows southeast for 1,600 km (980 mi), forming part of the boundary between Colombia and Ecuador and most of the border between Colombia and Peru. In its lower course the Putumayo crosses into Brazil, where it is known as the Içá, and empties into the Amazon River near Santo Antônio do Içá. The river is navigable during the rainy season for most of its length.
