Humberside, former county, northeastern England. In 1996 Humberside was dissolved and replaced by four unitary authorities: Kingston-upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, and North-East Lincolnshire. The region is bounded on the east by the North Sea and is crossed by the Humber estuary. It is a rich agricultural area producing livestock, grain, and vegetables. Hull and Grimsby are important British ports. Industry is diversified and concentrated in the larger cities. The region was included in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria and during the Middle Ages was a noted wool-producing area. Humberside was created in 1974 with the merger of parts of Lincolnshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
