Kankakee (river, United States), river, north central United States. Rising near South Bend, Indiana, the Kankakee flows southwest and west into northern Illinois until it meets the Iroquois River. From there it flows northwest to its confluence with the Des Plaines River, near Joliet. At their junction, the Des Plaines and the Kankakee form the Illinois River. The Kankakee is 360 km (220 mi) long.
