Jacques François Antoine Ibert (1890-1962), French composer, who wrote works for orchestra, ballet, chamber groups, voice, and films. He was born in Paris, and educated at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1919 he won the Prix de Rome. He was director of the French Academy in Rome (1937-1960) and was administrator of the Paris Opéra and Opéra Comique (1955-1957). Ibert was an ingenious and witty composer, revealing in his style the influence of French composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. His best-known composition is the orchestral suite Escales (Ports of Call, 1922). More from Encarta
