The battle took place on a low, narrow, isolated ridge called Kings Mountain. The American troops, some 900 frontiersmen under a divided command, trapped a force of about 1000 Loyalist militia at the top of the ridge. After an hour of heavy fighting, the British commander, Major Patrick Ferguson, was killed, and the British surrendered. The American casualties were 28 killed and 62 wounded, while the entire British force was either killed, wounded, or captured.
