Reserpine
Encyclopedia Article
Reserpine, purified alkaloid, prepared synthetically or from the root of the Indian plant Rauwolfia serpentina. One of the first drugs to be applied in the treatment of hypertension and of psychiatric illness, it has been supplanted in the treatment of psychosis by the phenothiazines, such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine). Reserpine therapy may induce extreme mental depression.
