Louisiade Archipelago

Louisiade Archipelago, island group, southeastern Papua New Guinea, including Tagula, Misima, and Rossel islands and numerous other small volcanic islands and coral reefs, in the Pacific Ocean. The archipelago is 1,600 sq km (600 sq mi) in area. The chief village, Bwagaoia, is on the eastern coast of Misima Island. The Spanish navigator Luis Vaez de Torres visited the island group in 1606; it was named for Louis XV of France in 1768.
