Encyclopedia Article
Mahānadī, river in east central India, traversing a length of 900 km (560 mi). It rises in west central Chhattisgarh state and flows eastward into Orissa state, where it cuts through a valley of the Eastern Ghats mountains and enters a delta near Cuttack to empty into the Bay of Bengal. The Tel and Hasdo rivers are major tributaries. Hirakud Dam (1956), a large earthen structure at Sambalpur, regulates the flow of the Mahānadī and produces hydroelectricity.
