Mount Pelee, volcano, northern Martinique Island, French West Indies, rising to about 1,397 m (4,583 ft). It became famous after it erupted on May 8, 1902, destroying the city of Saint-Pierre and causing the death of about 30,000 people in the city and surrounding area. Saint-Pierre had only one survivor. Earlier eruptions took place in 1792 and 1851.
