Antony Hewish

Antony Hewish, born in 1924, British astronomer and Nobel laureate, who in 1967, with assistant Jocelyn Bell, discovered the celestial objects now called pulsars (see Star). He was born in Fowey, England, and educated at the University of Cambridge. For their separate work, he and British astronomer Sir Martin Ryle were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1974.
