Windows Live® Search Results Cape Hatteras, promontory in eastern North Carolina. It projects into the Atlantic Ocean from Hatteras Island, one of a chain of islands separated from the mainland of North Carolina by Pamlico Sound. Shoals and frequent gales and storms make the surrounding waters dangerous for navigation. Southbound coasting vessels are apt to be crowded toward the cape by the eastern and western vibrations of the Gulf Stream, which is about 32 km (about 20 mi) to the east. Cape Hatteras National Seashore features Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (built 1870) and other points of historical interest.
