Server
Encyclopedia Article
Server, in computer science, a computer that supplies services or data to other machines on a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN) such as the Internet. Some servers run administrative software that controls access to all or part of the network and its resources (such as disk drives or printers). Others provide files, applications, or World Wide Web pages. Computers that request services or data from a server are known as clients. See also Client/Server Architecture.
