Caledonia, ancient Roman name for the country north of the firths of Forth and Clyde in Britain. Constituting most of present-day Scotland, the region was inhabited by the Picts, a warlike people who successfully resisted conquest by the Romans. In poetic and rhetorical usage, the name is a synonym for Scotland.
