Umbria

Umbria, administrative region, central Italy. Perugia is the capital. The terrain is generally hilly, with the Apennines passing through the eastern part of the region. The principal rivers are the Tiber and Nera. Umbria is a productive agricultural region with some industry. The name of the region is taken from the Umbrians, a people who settled here about 600 bc. Area, 8,456 sq km (3,265 sq mi); population 872,967 (2007 estimate).
