South Platte

South Platte, river, west central U.S., rising in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. It flows northeast to central Nebraska, where it joins the North Platte to become the Platte River. The South Platte is 680 km (420 mi) long and provides irrigation for northeastern Colorado. It flows through a deep canyon as far as Denver, Colorado, where it is joined by Cherry Creek, and north to Greeley, Colorado.
