Cuprite, cuprous oxide (Cu2O), sometimes known as ruby copper or red copper ore, an important copper ore, found in long crystals, in fine-grained aggregates, or in massive deposits (see Copper). The red, isometric crystals (see Crystal) are sometimes transparent. Cuprite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4 and a specific gravity of 6. Deposits are found in Australia, France, Great Britain, Kazakhstan, Namibia, Russia, and, with other copper ores, in Arizona.
