Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle, first of several meetings held in 1818 between Austria, Britain, Prussia, and Russia, the powers that defeated France in the Napoleonic Wars. The meetings were called to preserve the peace established by the Congress of Vienna at the end of the wars in 1815. At Aix-la-Chapelle (now Aachen, Germany), the four countries agreed to withdraw their occupation troops from France and to invite France to join them in an alliance to preserve order and combat revolutions in Europe. The most important result of the congress was the reconfirmation of the Holy Alliance between Russia, Austria, and Prussia.
