Levites
Encyclopedia Article
Levites, in the Old Testament, members of the tribe or family of Levi, son of Jacob, who acted as priests in the ancient kingdom of Judah. Until the collapse of Judah in 586 bc the terms priest and Levite were interchangeable. The Levites later assumed a secondary ceremonial role as the priesthood became the prerogative of the descendants of Aaron, who was himself a descendant of Levi.
