Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University, institution of higher learning, in Baltimore, Maryland. The university was founded in 1876. Funds for its establishment were provided in a bequest of $3.5 million by the American financier Johns Hopkins. He left an equal amount to found the Johns Hopkins Hospital, opened in 1893, which trains students of the university medical school. In addition to the medical school, considered one of the best in the world, and an applied physics laboratory, the principal divisions of the university include advanced international studies, arts and sciences, continuing studies, a conservatory of music, engineering, nursing, and public health. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees are conferred in arts and sciences, business, engineering sciences, music, and nursing. Master’s degrees are also conferred in drama, education, international studies, public health, and real estate. Doctoral degrees are conferred in arts and sciences, education, engineering sciences, medicine, international studies, music, nursing, and public health.

Research facilities at Johns Hopkins University includes the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, the Center for Communication Programs, the Center for Language and Speech Processing, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies, the Space Telescope Science Institution, the Pew Undergraduate Physics Research Lab, and the Institute for Policy Studies.
